  • Wisdom from Dandelions: A Biomimicry Course

In the early 2000’s, I met Janine Benyus. She had recently published her book Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature. I’ll admit, dandelions weren’t the first thought I had at the time, but the seed was planted. <wink>

She taught about a new science that studies nature’s models and then imitates or takes inspiration from these natural designs and processes and applies them to solve human problems.

Nature and living organisms have evolved well-adapted structures, materials, and systems over millions of years of evolution, and humans can look at nature for answers to all kinds of problems, including engineering and environmental sustainability.

There is much we can learn from Nature in a complex human world. I’m excited to offer this 6-part series based on inspiration from dandelions.

While dandelions are not native to the United States (they were brought over on the Mayflower), it’s not their fault they were transplanted here. We can learn much from them about compassion, diversity, resiliency, and self-care.

No art skills required. Each lesson in the series is designed to be done by anyone—you do not need to be an artist, I promise! If there is any drawing, you will be gently guided through the simple marks you need to make. If you can write your alphabet, you can follow these directions for simple lines.

No special materials needed. You also will not need special materials. I intentionally created this series for non-artists, with the awareness that you may only have a pen, pencil, and highlighter available. Of course, if you do have colored pencils or watercolor paints and want to use them, then go for it! Let yourself have fun.

You will be guided in the course on making a simple handmade journal to hold your lessons. Again, it’s nothing fancy (remember, no special materials are needed!) and helps to connect to your intention with the series. However, if you don’t want to make one, no problem. You can skip that part.

The course sells for $149. That’s only $25 per lesson.
